Yeah but depending on where you have it at...you could rent it out.
A cabin in Flagstaff would easily rent out in the winter. Everyone goes up there to ski/snowboard in the winter. Could rent it out then and go when we wanted during the winter. Live there in the summer months when the weather is perfect.
But I know what you mean. I would never buy a timeshare for the reason that it ties you down. I could see us buying an RV though when we are older and being the old couple in an RV going all over the US

I'll likely retire late......my profession allows for the lucrative part time gig. I suspect somewhere on the water with a boat on the lift.

Jesus, Arizona is lame. There are PLENTY of better places in the US to retire.
And frick healthcare. The Healthcare Industry is a crock of shite. Eat right and exercise and you will be fine unless you have some genetic disease

That only helps you until you get so old though. What happens if you get diagnosed with cancer or something like that? Start showing signs of Alzheimer's?

We are thinking along the same lines. We are building a house on Orcas Island and our general contractor is from Whidbey. We are heading up there tomorrow to visit family and lock down final plans with all the subs.

I love AZ. You could name all these "better places" and I'd probably hate half of them. To each his own.

A houseboat traveling the canals of Europe would do it for me. The wife wants to retire to Napa.
We will probably end up in Lafayette.

Yeah and the tons of retired snowbirds that own winter homes here agree with you.

Summer/Early Fall: Boundary Waters in Minnesota, or Jackson Hole.
Prime Duck Season: Mississippi Delta
Rest of Year: Orange Beach

None of that shite is happening.
Wife ain't leaving any grand kids, period - mine, yours, any wife.
It's too expensive in most of those places.
Most of us will be too old to surf, rock climb, all that when we do retire.
Which begs the question. Retire humbly at 50, or lavishly at 75?
