One of the folks in our neighborhood has one. I guess I could go look at it right now, but it is cold outside.

I see them all the time in the rurals.
Some in blackface, some not.

There are several of the fishermen ones on the Amite and Diversion or at least there were, I haven't really paid attention in the last few years. There was one on the upper part of the Diversion that was black for a while then white and then it disappeared.
When I was a senior in high school in 1983 I needed some elective classes to fulfill the requirements to graduate so I took art. In that class I made my mother a clay sculpture of a moss draped live oak tree, a small wooden dock and a young black male child fishing with a cane pole. There was no ill intent in my making that sculpture, it was inspired by every similar sculpture I had ever seen...I wasn't creative enough to come up with a different theme so I copied what I had seen. My mother has that sculpture in her romm to this day. Unfortunately for me her room is in an assisted living facility on the south side of Atlanta and is almost fully staffed by young black women. They all have been told by my mother, proud yet of her son's artistic talent, that sculpture was my own creation. I have gotten some sideways looks while visiting...based, no doubt, on that sculpture but more so on my 83 year old mother's continuous use of the word which must not be uttered. Combined I doubt very seriously that at least part of that staff considers us klansmen. Thats their burden to bear...I can't change their mind and Mama is only interested in reinforcing their image LOL.

I have several
Not sure the modern interpretation but here is some actual true history
They were key in the Underground Railroad network before the Civil War
Light = Safe to stay the night
Dark = Unsafe to stay the night
The jockey industry at the time was all black and a source of great revenue for the rider (Think Michael Jordan in sports in the 1800's).
The "ring" held a lantern at night but during the day it held the reins when no rider was on board (think hitching bar outside a Saloon in old Westerns).

In the past, all jockeys were black, so the ones in my possession are all black, not blackface.

I had that same one, I threw away the fishing pole and carved out a big dick for him and painted it black. A week later someone stole him off the front porch.

Checks out, VolOL fans and their dick and boxed wine fetish.

There was a record store in Charlottesville, Virginia that had a lawn jockey that they'd repurposed as a door stop. They'd grinded it into a little alien, painted it green, and added antennae.
This was the 80's. You wouldn't get away with that today.

The irony of the Sambo
#1 Sambo was Indian (dot not feather) not African
#2 Like "Alice in Wonderland" or "Gulliver's Travels" they attacked British Rule
#3 Sambo is the protagonist (India) and the Tiger is the antagonist (Britain)
#4 Sambo uses his mind to outwit the Tiger, not kill him by physical force
I have "correct" lawn jockeys on my property
#1 They are black jockeys according to the actual history of the time
#2 They are in actual racing silks of different farms / owners of the time

A neighbor about 5 houses down from me had a couple of the red shirt blackface ones in his yard for the last decade. It was a middle aged white gay couple that owned the house. They sold the house late last year and now they are gone.
