Gold star.

Social Media overload has turned our society upside down and many don't seem to realize it, or maybe it's just those in certain positions that feel pressured to acknowledge, respond and even cave in to social media bitch fits, like media types, politicians, celebs, etc.

Big Pete - I feel all the frustration you're expressing. I've addressed this one before. Bottom line: Race relations in the U.S. remain very complex.

Let's take both sides of it - the 'black folks' responsibility' first:

During slavery, Reconstruction, Jim Crow and the 1960s Civil Rights movement, black folks in the U.S. developed certain survival skills and instincts that were invaluable in getting through a lot of heinous shite. You see the residual effects of it all the time - notably "Country dumb" and "sticking together at all costs." "Country dumb" is acting stupid around white people to avoid serious consequences OR to disarm them by making them think they have more of a smarts advantage they don't actually have. "Sticking together at all costs" means you have a mother of a felon since he was 14 - he gets involved in some high profile shite, and she gets on camera and says, "No way my baby did anything like that. The cops set him up." It becomes, therefore, laughably easy to lump all (or most) black folks together when they stand in solidarity behind black criminals.

On the other side, a lot of white folks are already inclined to think the worst of black folks, no matter how enlightened or "progressive" they might be. It's human nature. I prejudge a group of black teenagers wearing bandanas, smoking marijuana pretty much the same way a black professional the same age as I would. Not going to just run over them with my car, but keeping an eye on them. It's not personal, it's risk management.

But, what race does - for those with a lazy intellect - is provide an index card. We see black skin and make all sorts of assumptions about the upbringing, exposure to crime, exposure to drugs - and like all stereotypes - this one has a kernel of truth. A significant portion of black folks had less-than-ideal childhoods and, as a group, were exposed to more negativity and vileness than a comparably sized group of whites. Whites have a criminal underbelly and trash subculture, but we don't see white skin and make all these assumptions (other than the silly notion of "white privilege")

And, it should be noticed that, particularly on the "black" side - there is a whole industry dedicated to keeping blacks in convenient boxes to herd them into voting booths every election cycle and ginned up anytime something controversial happens in race relations that goes the wrong way for the minority.

This industry keeps race front and center in politics and the media. Ferguson protests, Zimmerman/Martin, hate crime legislation - despite the relatively low incidence compared to the barbarism that black folks inflict on each other - only serves to reinforce the (IMHO false) notion that blacks are somehow inferior and need special protection from the oppressive white majority. There may have been a time when that was necessary, but this whole racial Balkanization that you have hinted at is not doing a single one of us any good in the 21st Century.

People are stupid and not as important as they think.

IDK the answer, but I blame it on all this caring and sensitive crap that started in the 90s, as well as the feminization of men stereotype that is propagated be television.

Yes.

Why do we allow the vocal minority to somehow represent the whole now.

That vocal minority now ruins lives of anyone who opposes them. They're the worst kinds of terrorists.

The media feeds and fuels these people. They aren't journalists anymore. They're only concerned with reporting the most controversial topics in the most controversial way and the earliest.

Facts, sides, truth, none of that has any place in the main stream media. I

And once a story is reportered everyone runs with the original reporting as fact. Even if it's proven false, they will either continue to lie or never report the correction.

Joseph Goebbels would be truly amazed and proud of he saw the propaganda division machine America has working right now.

I get freedom of press, but at the same time, I wish Fox, CNN, MSNBC and the likes weren't given so much credit for being credible.

It's sad that I have to get a European news source for unbiased reporting.

Why should a moderate Muslim who doesn't condone violence and doesn't adhere to Sharia law have to apologize for the actions of radical jihadist Muslims?

They shouldn't. That is the point of my whole thread.

Everyday we walk around living in a great country. We interact pleasantry with all people for the most part everyday. However, for some reason we allow the media/social media to tell us differently.

A spoiled arse nation of mouth-breathers is to blame. Most people now think the world revolves around them. If more spent time thinking of others, instead of their own feelings, this problem wouldn't exist.

Social media is nothing but a refection of the society as a whole. The reason so much of it is fricked up is because well... there's a lot of fricked up people out there nowadays.

Wrong. Plenty of people don't even use social media.

Social media is a reflection of attention seeing ignorant screamers and fringe minorities that now have an avenue to blast their backwards insane opinions to the world.

And the fact social media is eaten up with them is a refection on what our society is becoming.

I really do not get this line of thinking in our country right now.

If a person who is black commits a crime, why should I or any black person have to apologize for them? Like the Bryce Williams situation. There were people on this site and in general upset that black people were screaming from the roof tops openly condemning this man.

It goes each way. Why should a white person have to apologize for the actions of other whites. Nobody here had anything to do with a Dylan Roof. Any black person spouting out that line of thinking is an idiot.

Whatever happened to individual responsibility?

When did all of this happen? Seriously, when did we all lose the ability to use a little common sense. Has the media hype and hysteria machine really gotten this strong.

Why do we allow the vocal minority to somehow represent the whole now. Why do we cave when two people on twitter get butt hurt over something that is absolutely trivial.

When did we start thinking it was okay to let teenage boys use the same facilities and locker rooms as our teenage daughters because they feel different.

I mean we could literally go on and on all day with this foolishness.

The short answer is that we have nothing better to do. We live in a Western Culture where everything is easy, where most of these problems, when you get down it, are extremely minor. Where even lower class have modern conveniences like cell phones, big tvs, automobiles. Where they can live comfortably, or more comfortably if they were responsible. But most people, MOST people, aren't secure with themselves. This causes projection, needs to force others into actions, condemn groups of people, and meddle. That's where the antagonism comes from. That's why our political landscape is a morass of crap. We lost the will to debate together, and have just gone into everything like it's a war.

You can't have individual responsibility if internally you feel you are broken. Not only that that leads you to project onto everything else that things are broken and need fixing, and that any opinion that you don't agree with needs to be fixed. Needs to be meddled with. Social Media and the media in general facilitate this.

Everyone is afraid of putting limitations on anything because enough people have nothing better to do than to attack any little thing they view as negative.
