When did school pictures get so expensive?

Last year, my kids daycare hired a photographer to come take the pictures of the kid. I ended up buying one for $18. Fast forward this year, the school hired a different photographer. I just looked at the prices. Two digital photos for $90. There’s also a package where you get 1 framed and 4 pictures for $500.

This made sense 30 years ago but now that we all walk around with minimum one camera on our person 24/7, its a scam. I would not pay more than $5 for a school picture.
I also declined wedding pics and my wife (no pics) being as cool as she is immediately agreed. My father has nicer cameras than cars, and he took about ten good pics. That is all we need.

Why you don't just walk around like a g with the proof in your wallet?

Exactly…my wife’s iPhone takes some phenomenal pictures. I usually take ‘em to Walgreens and print them real cheap.

Photoshop isn't cheap to fix ugly kids.

Stop thinking like a dude. Women "need" school pictures. From the school.
But OP, I hope you don't have daughters about to start dance. Two costumes for one "show" over $500. You can't imagine it, but it gets worse.

Yall use Eye Wander Photo now too? My kid's school needs to go back to Romaguera.

I've been paying for grandkids' pics for a few years now .... I thought the kids were shaking me down, banking a profit.
All of my grandkids go to private schools, it's ridiculous how much portraits cost.
They're yearbook portraits too.

I bet there were years of my childhood where the school picture, halloween and my birthday might have been the only three pictures of me for the year.
in 2024 I have 32 pics of my kid's leg rash on my phone so I could email a few to the pediatrician. Every moment of their lives is in my pocket.
Unless the school pic captures them picking their nose or wearing a Sarah Palin in a bikini t-shirt (latter is a true story, 3rd grade) It isn't worth the price.
Side bar: I didn't buy the 3rd grade photo because they made him wear a winter coat over it. He picked it out on an Alaska trip and we thought it was funny and bought it. Forgot it was picture day.

When your kids get older, there is a for sure drop off in pictures. We took thousands of pictures of two of them before they went to school. Hit about second grade, and it just slacks off, even from women.
But I care far more about taking two pics of my kids over a weekend in Dallas, than I do about bullshite school pictures.

These people are going to go extinct and I’m here for it.
My iPhone does just fine with some props from Amazon.

I still use my "fully paid for just once" CS5.1 version of photoshop. Works just fine and beats the hell out of paying $50.00 a month for a subscription to be allowed to use the current version.

Dude, if your photo editing, of your kids, goes beyond hitting the auto-edit, and moving on with your life after posting to the family album...

I swear preschool pictures are marked up because the kids that age are so darn cute. Middle school? Eh.
Those prices are outrageous though. I'm still pissed about the 4K picture prices from my youngest (who is now in second grade) and they were nowhere near that. Maybe in the $100 range for four pictures. I probably have the price sheet in her baby book, it pissed me off so much.

No. You don't need 4k or 1080p pictures to send to grandparents and aunts, even if they're 8x10s, which nobody sends. 2x3, 3x5, it is a racket.

you do not have to buy them.
