When did crab island shed its family friendly atmosphere and became a raucous party weekly

Seems like every weekend for the past couple of years there’s a huge crowd every weekend during the summer months. Used to be non-holiday weekends you could have a great time with far less people. Nowadays it’s like spring break every weekend.
Are hotel/condo/rental boat rates lower than they used to be? Or has it just become popular due to Facebook and particularly Instagram?
I prefer the more laid back crab island. It’s become Lake Havasu of the 90’s back when MTV did their spring break there.

Friend,
On a class level I put current day Destin on par with Biloxi and Gulfport Shores. There is so little redeeming culture there one is best avoiding it. The unchurched, immoral masses have turned a beautiful patch of God’s land into a disgusting playground for reprobates. There are safe alternatives on each side: Uncle has a condo at Portofino on Pensacola Beach, which is lovely. One of our cousins has a home east of Destin which is more relaxing and had more beautiful water. The only downside is fighting the Destin traffic to and from that spot. On the whole I concur with your observation entirely. Thank you for warning others.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

frick laid back crab Island. We went there yesterday and it was a fricking blast.
There are no nightclubs, titty bars, etc for adults to do.
People come to Destin just for crab island

This is the answer. I’m paying $800+ per month for my boat to sit on a rack at Legendary and yet some a-hole who rented a pontoon boat for a quarter of that price is going to run across my anchor line while not adhering to the no wake zone. frick that shite!
We only venture out that way between Monday and Thursday and never on a holiday week. The locals have started referring to it as trash island and they really are not wrong. There are a few spots outside of crab island that offer similar options for boaters, but lately those spots have also been getting a bit crowded, but no trash yet.
