I have never had any place (including dealerships) add on a "diagnostic" charge.

I had a 2020 Dodge 1/2 ton 4WD that was ROUGH....had about 300k on it and it was beat to hell....but ran well. Started throwing a code and it was a crank position sensor. I replaced it a couple of times and it worked but it would go bad again. It was going bad because the crank was actually slipping out of place...bad bearings. Lots of miles. It broke down in the middle of nowhere New Mexico and I had it towed to a shop. I told them what I though was wrong and they said they'd do a diagnostic on it. Called me a few days later and they said the motor was done, bearings were shot, and it would be $450 for the diagnostic if I did not pay them $7k for a junkyard engine LOL. I told them I'd pay the diagnostic. When I went to pick it up I asked the old boy how they had gotten under the hood. It was tied shut with tie wire and the tie wire had not been touched. He said they opened the hood with the latch. I asked him why and he said "to do the diagnostic". I said "the harness is under the dash, not under the hood"....he wanted to argue the point until I pointed out that the truck did not have a hood latch it had a hood tie wire and that tie wire had not been touched. He was pissed but admitted his "technician" may have lied about doing the diagnostic and I did not owe him anything.....thats the closest I ever got to paying for a diagnostic test and that is about as much good as they ever do....

Alignments are the most oversold, incorrectly performed automoble service in the country. At least they aren't destructive like transmission flushes.

Rotate your tires, and unless your car is pulling to either side (not under braking), skip it.

ETA: I saw your 2nd post, yeah, get an alignment, but rotate tires first. Drive it, and be sure it's doing the same thing.

Firestone has a lifetime alignment deal. I think it’s $100 more. Seems good if you are going to keep the vehicle and stay in the area for a number of years.

Definitely would do if lived in NO metro area.

This is what I learned, early on, from the owner of my auto service shop in BR. He always emphasized on his Sat AM radio show that a wheel alignment is a repair & not a maintenance item.

Here is a good article he wrote for his website on myths of wheel alignment. IOW, you shouldn’t be bringing in your vehicle for alignment unless you are having a steering - tire wear issues at which point a hopefully an experienced tech should diagnose what the issue is and take it from there. And of course you would expect to pay for the shop’s time for a diagnosis, but then as others have said that cost is usually rolled into the cost of the repair, if a repair is warranted to fix an issue.

Serious question. You think a shop plugs in their scanner to diagnose a pull and \ or worn out front end parts?
