Try a sequence with just letters:
O, T, T, F, F, S, S, E, N, T, E, T, T, F, F, S ...
What's next?
O, T, T, F, F, S, S, E, N, T, E, T, T, F, F, S ...
What's next?

45
You add 3 to each prior difference then add that to the prior number
5 7 12 20 31
Differences b/t above r below
2. 5. 8. 11
Differences between those is the addition of 3 to the prior differences
So add 3 to 11 and you get 14. 14 added to its prior, 31 is 45.

7+0+5=12
12+1+2+7=20
20+7+1+2=31
31+12+2+0=45
Answer is 45
You see 5, 7, 12, 20, 31, _____
You take the number and you add it to the number two numbers back and then add the middle
Number broken into singular integers.
So to get to 12 it’s 7+0 because there is no second number back + 5 is 12.
Then to get to 20 it’s the number 12 plus itself broken into integers or 1+2 plus the previous number which is 7
Then to get to 31 it’s 20 plus 7 plus 12 broken which is 1+2 plus another half over again which is 1 remainder so 31
12+1+2+7=20
20+7+1+2=31
31+12+2+0=45
