What's the issue with strip malls and what is the alternative?

I often hear people speak negatively of strip malls and that they are ugly.
What is the alternative to strip malls and why is this alternative less ugly?
I'll hear people describing a section of town as ugly because it's got a lot of strip malls, for example.

I assume the alternative would be a free standing building.
I like strip malls especially if I can knock out a few stops within the same parking lot.

Depends on the part of town. Depends on the stores.
Nice part of town with expensive stores = classy crowd and a good time
Shitty part of town with cheap stores = trashy crowd, dirty kids running around everywhere, bad smells and a bad time
A trashy strip mall is going to be ugly because it's surrounded by trash. A nice strip mall will be nice because it has nice things and is surrounded by nice things.

depends... i think the ones going up right off Old Jefferson by Blue Bayou are going to be pretty nice.... there are some that are very nice looking, and they have good/cool/innovative businesses....
then there are those that look shitty from jump, and attract run of the mill/ordinary/antiquated businesses....

Everythong on the ot is trashy, ugly, horrible.
Strip malls, newer ones anyway, are ok looking for shopping.
Better than some mall that the lights dont work so it is so dark inside.

Nice ones are nice, but the ones in the shitty areas of town aren't going to be nice.

Like everything, the more effort put into the design of a strip mall, the better it is.
I think the area where Town Center is in Baton Rouge by Whole Foods is very nice.

They are pretty much everywhere. Hard to avoid them actually.
IMO the very best Mexican restaurants are often in plain looking strip malls in sketchy areas. Usually between a Check Cashing place and a nail salon.

Unoriginal, mostly chains, all look pretty similar
Same reason I'm much more a fan of a corner store with character than a shiny new race trac off every interstate exit.
