If interest rates continue to climb all these numbers will drop. It’s been free money forever

I am building on 1.25 acres in Broussard. The construction + lot = $260 sft.
The home is custom with quartz counters, custom cabinets with hardwood floors and crown. It isn't over the top with amenities but is pretty nice. We could have probably dialed it back to $ 235 sft if we made a few cuts here and there.
it is expensive to build or buy right now.

$/sq ft is a figure that can be developed a lot of different ways
Land cost varies wildly from the hood to the golf course
Garage sq ft cost should be lower than finished indoor
Porch sq ft cost should be lower than finished indoor
Modern materials and codes add to cost
Personnal choice for finishes/trim/floors etc add to cost
Except for range finding your mortgage capability $/sq ft is not a hard number

And my home is on a .32 acre lot, not some little arse lot like most today.

According to the PVA in Lexington, my house is $163. Bought/built it in 2020 for $145.

It depends on how well it is done. I won't bore you with the details, but I went from owning to renting about 5 years ago. I rented a very nice (efficient) 3BR/2Ba on about .22 or .25 and it was as you suggested, pretty small. Then, we moved back home and rented on about .32. It is also small.
I'm used to 2/3 of an acre and up.

I don’t claim to be rich. And seriously? We were talking about the city two pages ago, and it’s below my username.

Paid $141 in 2015. Worth $186 now. No one should pay that much for my house. Friends with new builds appraised for $225. This is in Ascension.

Well, in smaller towns and bedroom communities there are. We're fortunate enough to have a double lot where we are now, each one about .9.

We just built a new home that was finished in December and it ended up at around $380/sq foot in Overland Park, KS (suburb of KC).

I certainly think it’s a step or two above Lafayette.
But hey, you’re happy where you live and I’m happy where I live. Neither one of us would want to trade places with the other. Nothing wrong with that.
Different strokes for different folks.

Enjoy being house poor.

Congratulations on feeling superior (my place is paid off as well) and enjoy your next fancy date night in River Ranch!

New construction here is about $270\sf. So a 3000sf house is $800,000.
