This is a serious question:
Who decides that order of operations in accepted mathematics? Is it dictated by logic, or is it just something mathematicians go together and agreed upon?

Is it? I was using the old English spelling. Because of how intellegent I am. Idiot. Interesting that you didn't pick up on that.

it isn't poorly written if you're testing the understanding of PEMDAS.
Yes. It is. It's written like that on purpose.

I could almost buy 3.6 if the person assumes that the 6 squared is divided by the rest of the equation after the division sign. But 10 is just wrong.

Except this isn't one of those.
Lol. Like I'm going to take math advice from a woman. I'll call you when I have a question about laundry or sandwiches.

Pretty sure it is the latter. Basically it is an accepted standard, to my knowledge at least.

I got a C in College Algebra, as evidenced by this thread.

Parenthesis exponent multiply divide add subtract
6^2 / 2(3) + 4
36 / 6 + 4
6 + 4 = 10
6^2 / 2(3) + 4
36 / 6 + 4
6 + 4 = 10

As long as you get the next 9 questions correct you'll be fine.

FIFY. PEMDAS is no different than PEDMSA.

Parenthesis exponent multiply divide add subtract
Multiplication and division are interchangeable. So are addition and subtraction. It's whatever comes first.

^^^ That's just as accurate as PEMDAS.

Someone said since the parentheses contain only one number it doesn't get calculated first and serves only as a multiplication symbol.

Multiplication then Division
the question here is weather you should divide by 2 or by 6. the parenthesizes dictates the 2(3) is under 6^2.

6-squared is 36
36/10=3.6
is that not right?
36/10=3.6

OK. Then why isn't the 4 in the denominator?
