re: What’s better. Working for an employer or having your own business?

Well my boss is a jerk but then again the lone employee is lazy so that means I work for myself.
If I am not having lunch with a client then I eat lunch at 11AM and nap from Noon to 1PM.
I have had to report to some real idiots in my lifetime when working for others. There was one company head who allowed me some freedom to jump on opportunities slightly outside the company services. Then he died of a heart attack at a young age.

Correct but you also don't get any paid time off unless you manage your money correctly.
Ah yes the right that employees have to delay their responsibilities for a cumulative 2 weeks a year. Really outweighs the benefit of not having to answer to anyone when something comes up.
For any job that has some level of importance, PTO is a joke. The problems you left for vacation will simply be waiting when you come back.

I do both. Can’t wait to retire and sell the business hopefully in the next 10 years. I’m 56 now

So not true

I think there are probably good and bad things about both. My Dad has run a small business my entire life. He enjoys working for himself, but it can also be stressful because other people depend on your actions for their livelihood. He's also found it hard to truly "get away" from work at times on weekends and vacations (though he is better about it now than he once was).

I think I have the best of both worlds, as a partner I am a K-1 employee and technically self-employed and have most of those benefits but have many of the benefits of being an employee.
I don't pay any overhead directly (outside of my personal malpractice insurance, CLEs, bar dues, and other incidentals) and if my department has a down month or two there are 7 others to take up the slack. I can hire and fire staff/associates at will but I do have to make my case to the other partners if I want to add a position. I have a lot of control but also have the safety net of being an "employee". Being an HCE I am limited in my 401k contributions but we also have a cash balance pension plan.
