Inherently? LSU and proximity to New Orleans during Mardi Gras

On the surface(ie. not mutually exclusive)? My family and not much else.

When was the last time a James Beard award went to a chef not from New Orleans, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Charleston, etc? How many Michelin Star awards go to restaurants that aren't in metro areas well over 1 million people or tourism destinations?

Every single solitary year.

Great food isn’t a location. It’s just great food. Huntsville Alabama has a James Beard awarded chef. Matter of fact Auburn has a semi finalist I believe.

One of these days, I hope you will let me show you how much BR has changed since you left. Then you can show me how nice Arizona is to live. We'll do it as a couple podcast episodes for SFP.

You are being very nice tonight about BR. Other than LSU I got nothing.

When I first came to BR as a wee tot (late '70s) I thought it was paradise. It was a pretty nice place throughout the '80s.

I left around 1990 and didn't come back until 2000. It was immediately very clear that the city had changed a great deal, like virtually every other Southern city.

I'm not gonna pretend like baton rouge is the worst city on Earth, but it's hilarious to me when people list proximity to New Orleans as a "good" thing about it. As if you can't just live in the city that's so great (in their opinion) that just being close to it is good enough for your city. And do these people also not realize new Orleans has a fricking airport and you can just fly there from any other God damn city in the world.

Bob I grew up loving BR but the last few trips through BR the word "shithole" jumps to the forefront. Traffic, shitty roads, and trash everytime I looked off the interstate. I know you guys got that new hot shot mayor now so I maybe wrong.

You do realize that I still had to come to BR almost every year to visit my parents when they still lived there? Sucks having to shell out $$$ to travel to BR. Every time I planned that trip I would get depressed thinking of all the other places I could have gone to for the same price airfare wise(ex: the cost of airfare to BR was sometimes the same as airfare to Hawaii...now that was really depressing to me then).

I know how BR has changed...for the worst.

I apologize for my ignorance. I guess Baton Rouge is completely irredeemable because it's never gotten one despite New Orleans having a total of 34 winners. After all, even consensus shithole Jackson, MS has 1 James Beard award winner. I guess that means BR is the worst place in the world. Oh, well.

ETA, I searched on the James Beard site and never saw so much as a nominee from Huntsville, but did see that Auburn has had 2 semi-finalists. Good for them.

New Orleans is a world class tourist attraction. Do people in Denver not brag about being close to Breckenridge? Do people in San Francisco not brag about being close to Napa Valley?

Bob... you just go too far over the top with the whole Great Food thing. People travel and live places with truly great food. They’re not tricked. They get it.

And I guess to answer the question the good thing about BR is LSU. But it's only good while you're going there. After graduating living in this town sucks. And frankly living in Louisiana sucks. Taxes are high and politicians are all crooked so nothing ever gets fixed from infrastructure to education. The state is lacking in all departments and baton rouge is a shining example of that.

No because why would they. Those places are just as accessible to me living in baton rouge because airplanes exist.
