In the book I just read, on death row, they stayed in their cell 23 hrs a day. However, he became so well liked by the guards they let him out and he would cook for them, they would all go to him with their life problems, etc.
It got to the point where the guards were pulling for him and hoping he would get out (which was rare, guards hear people say all day long that they are innocent, when they are not).
