The dealership used "Policy Evaluation Tool" which submits it to GM to have it partially covered. GM is offering to cover 15% so it's down to approximately $7,200 for a new engine.

Technically it’s for the long block. He’ll still need things like manifolds, fuel system, alternator, starter, wiring, etc.
But, unless there is something wrong with those components on his old engine, they should be able to do an R&I on them and swap them to the long block. But of course that will all come with the expense of labor.
Having said all that, I don’t see how the dealer could arrive at a price of $10K or more. They’re screwing this guy.

Don't be the a-hole that trades in a truck with a bad engine.
Why not? A dealership would damn sure sell you one if you’d buy it.

A four year old truck that is already dead?
That's criminal.
That's criminal.

Just had similar situation with my 2016 Ram 1500 w/ 97000 miles. Bad lifters and cam. My trusted local private shop replaced with remanned engine for $5800 including a 3 year 36000 mile warranty. In past year I had already replaced the water pump. Truck still looks brand new inside and out. Was a no brained for me especially when you consider how much a new or even slightly used truck cost today.
