The same that keeps chemical weapons from being used. Countries will fight, but they aren't stupid enough to pull the nuke card. That would ensure their destruction.
There most like will be one within the next 20 years or so. Maybe it will start as a series of small ones that overlap into something much bigger.

I see a lot of people mentioning Iran in this thread. Can someone please list some reasons why we shouldn't be allies with Iran, please?

Can you list a reason why we should be an ally to a country that openly supported terror cells/attacks - especially those used against our own troops?

We'll that's obviously incorrect. I'll allow an argument that the major governments are just as involved, but it is simply disingenuous to argue that the public at-large has never been as connected as they are right now.
You need to go read a bit and learn just how intertwined the economies of the major nations were at the end of the 19th century. Your post shows that right now you're totally ignorant of the economic framework of that time.

Ia agree SFP. Globalization and the internet has brought the world so much closer. If Mankind can last a few more Decades i beleive the masses will feel almost as one. Now there is a Religon out there right now that may not care for anything but others beleiving what they do and killing all those who do not. These people will have to be eradicated if they continue towards that Objective or well all could be put in danger.

Post some links.
I'll post some for everytime the USA has supported and funded terror groups and we'll see who has a longer list and who's list has more acts in the past 20 years.
The USA has few remaining reasons to not be allies with Iran and they have plenty to fear attack from us; we've been trying to go to war with them for decades. Luckily they aren't an aggressive, war-hungry nation like the USA.

Yes, everyone knows that if you're honest about history and judge it objectively, without nationalistic-colored glasses, you're a commie.
Post some links, please.
Let me put you in your place, baw.

this is incorrect in every meaningful way AND outside of the "major powers", the world is exponentially more intertwined, which is just as important.

The economies have nothing to do with it.
economies have everything to do with it
again, as the international world has developed, war has all but ceased to exist

Or maybe in the middle east Iran decides to do something either overt or covert - maybe, say, launching a small nuke-tipped missile from a remote area in a bordering country.
i assume you mean against the US, which would likely lead to the persian gulf war, part 2
china isn't going to sit back and let iran disrupt the oil markets or threaten china's ambitions in the region

Or maybe Pakistan and India unleashing hell over a border dispute.
this may bring the world another major war, but it's very unlikely that it would evolve into a world war
the fact that we're using a typical border/resource war as an example of a "World" war shows you how long it's been

Oh, man, global economic interdependence. 1914 can't compare. Global trading is immediate now. Programs do automatic trading which creates INSTANT change in the market, making it increasingly unpredictable.

my main hope with this ISIS situation is that it normalizes relations with Iran

Ditto
Beautiful country.
The young people are much more educated, progressive and technologically savvy than previous generations and they don't hate the USA despite us giving them a million reasons to.
I'll say it again, Iranian sanctions are my litmus test.

You're trying to tell me that the world is just as interconnected and interdependent today as it was two years after the Titanic sank. C'mon.

I once read someone write the following on going to war with Russia: fighting a conventional war with Russia is like getting in a fist fight with someone that you know has a pistol in his pocket. You don't know if he will use it or when he will use it but you know that it is there.
So does that mean Russia has the pistol or we have the pistol?
I would say more like America has a machine gun & some hand grenades.
