Shirt tails tucked in. Was like that from middle school until senior year when they relaxed the rule.
I could see them making someone do it on a case by case basis if they were wearing a really long shirt, but that wasn't the case for most of us.

Late 80's....kids were banned from wearing "jams" as PE shorts.
