What to expect? Recruiter called about my resume on Monster

A recruiter called before I awoke and left a voicemail asking to call him back. He said that he was from New Era recruiting and is calling about a developmental engineering position that has opened up. Is the company paying this guy to recruit people, or is he going to asking something of me?
What should I expect when I return his call?

Headhunter....Contracted by the firm to set up interviews. He likely gets a small fee for each interview sucessfully set up and then a commission on the hire.
He's probably not going to ask you much more than confirming what you have on your resume.

Hmmm so I guess there is no harm in calling him back?

No harm at all. If he asks you to pay him or tells you he will collect a fee from you after placement, hang up. The company should pay recruiters.

Well that's why you signed up ain't it?

Call him back and find out what he wants. Stop being a pansy

Don't let him know that you were scared to simply return his call. It's a sign of weakness

He is calling through a third party.
They have gotten the job requisition from the company most likely. Expect a contract position to start and the pay to be less at first because the recruiting agency gets a cut IF you're hired

Maybe this is why you are unemployed

No harm at all. Hell, I got my current job from a cold call from a recruiter. It's always good to keep your options open.

Interview with the company. If offered, find out how much the pay is. Turn down said offer. Then, call the company directly, and ask for more money; accept position if you like it. This happens all the time.

I get about 5-10 of these calls a day. My skills are in demand I guess and every single one of them is a third party indian recruiter firm. It's almost as bad as telemarketers now.
Unless you are actually looking for a job, never EVER modify anything on your monster, dice, etc. accounts otherwise you will be bombarded.
Good luck and prepare thy anus.

As others have said, call hi back. If he ask for money at all its a scam.
Otherwise the company is paying him and maybe other recruiters to find candidates to interview. If you got hired and he found you he gets a cut.
I get these calls sometimes in the medical field. Sometimes complete bs, other times jobs I'm really interested in.

Expect a contract position
This is exactly what it was. A 12 month contract
I'm not sure if it could lead to a full time job and worth pursuing.

sounds like the guy is a head hunter for a company looking to hire.

You won't know that until you speak to the company. More than likely it could turn into a full-time position. Many times a company will hire as a contract position so that they aren't obligated to keep you if you don't perform up to their standards.

They get paid by the company they place you with. About 30% of what ever salary they get you. They will kiss your arse, bc you are like a big check made out to cash for them.

His goal is to make you the most money bc he makes a percentage off your salary. Will not hurt and I know several people who have used a recruiter several times

Many times, if you Google the text of his message you will find the corporate posting on the position. Some recruiters will find the posting, contact the company and secure an agreement to feed them candidates for a percentage. In my experience, this fee reduces your liklihood of negotiating a higher salary or signing bonus because of the fee to the recruiter.
If you can locate the source of the recruiter's message, go around the recruiter to HR. Your resume speaks for itself and a recruiter, on a publicly posted position, is not going to land you the job interview. Your resume and approach will.
