Same issue with the F-16 and F-35

I think I disagree with you on the F-16. If I'm not mistaken, it started as a multi-role fighter and did an absolute fantastic job. I'm not well read on the plane so I could be mistaken. I was under the impression that it was given more ground attack role, an area where it wasn't specifically designed for, because it was such a good airframe that it could be used in that manner.

The F-35 was such a boondoggle because there is an assumption among bean counters that technology has caught up with the idea of an all purpose aircraft but that is not how engineering works.

The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe was probably the first big work of non-fiction I read as a child. I remember seeing a cardboard cutout display of the cover at Waldenbooks, with all the Mercury astronauts in their spacesuits, and begging my parents for a copy.

When the movie came out, of course I wanted to see that, too. Probably the best part is when Chuck Yeager takes an F-104G (I think that's what it's called... it's basically an F-104 with a rocket on the back) for a test flight.

Yeager keeps going higher and higher until he can literally see the barrier between the sky blue atmosphere and the deep, starry expanse of outer space. It must have been an incredible experience even for him.

The scene was incredibly well-filmed, and the audience was completely rapt- and dead silent, until a little black kid sitting in the row behind me exclaimed, "Damn! This n*gga in space!"

The whole theater laughed, which was a bit inappropriate since, right after this kid's comment, the F-104G went into a flat spin and Yeager ended up mind-melding with his piping hot nylon underclothing.

The same for me. I read Yeagers autobiography as well. The movie made out like they showed up at a bar one day and asked him to fly the Bell to break the sound barrier the next day. In reality it took months. I know the movie can’t go into every detail.

Here is a released video of Yeager’s crash.

And the F-104 thing was portrayed as a joyride. It makes for a good movie, and I'm sure Yeager pushed to get the flights he wanted, but "joyrides" are just not a thing in the USAF or NASA.

Haha I hear you. It ended up being an oil panel door, and its location makes it hard to see by anybody actually.

I've heard good things about the F8 Crusader, that it was a hell of a plane.

I love the F-15C and F-14, but the F-4 (both B/J and E models) is my all-time favorite.

What is the 5-4-3-2 count down on the film as the plane is on the way down?

Halon. This is my second stint in the 96th, with a stop at UPT in between.
