What is your definition of happiness?

I was in church this past Sunday for Easter and the pastor spoke about happiness and when and how you can find it. He said something along the lines of, "when I turn 16 and can get my driver's license," then I'll be happy ... "when I get my own car," then I'll be happy ... "when I graduate from college," well then I'll be happy ... "when I get my first professional job of our school," then I'll be happy ... "when I get married" I'll be happy. And there was a long pause and plenty of laughs.
"When I have kids," then I'll be happy and "when the kids grow up and move out," then I'll be happy. He went on to say, that you'll never be happy as long as you keep chasing something. Happiness has to come from within. And I think he is right.
For me, happiness is a unique commodity. It is never found by the person shopping for it. Genuine happiness is the by-product of making someone else happy. So as you close out your day and go home to your wife, girlfriend or both and kids, do something for them that will put a smile on their face and enjoy the happiness that you have created for someone that you care deeply about.
Chances are, you'll get a great joy out of doing it and that my friend, is happiness.

Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get. I think it is a quote from Dave Gardner.

I think too many people pursue the goal of happiness like it's the place you get too where it's just euphoria all the time. I think contentment should be the real end game.
I've always heard that the key to happiness is to think about what you're grateful for over and over like a prayer.

I think happiness is completely in the hands of the individual. Nothing “buys” happiness - not money, cars, a great job, etc. I’ve seen poor people extremely happy and content with their lives. Alternatively, I’ve seen rich people miserable.
Happiness is an intangible that is based primarily on an individual’s outlook of one’s self and life.
Simply put, it’s a choice to live happy rather than to live in sorrow and self pity.

When I die and can tell the IRS to kiss my arse, then I’ll be happy

Well, then I find happiness a couple times a day. Sometimes three when my wife is gone.

What you pass along in an inheritance will also be taxed.
Thanks for playing this game of life.

Not comparing my life to others. I learned early on that everyone has their own path and "peeking over the neighbors fence", so to speak, and comparing what you have with what someone else has is a recipe for misery. There's always going to be someone who has it better than you. That's life. Focus on the good things you have and set goals for yourself because it's what you want, not because you THINK that's what you're supposed to want.

I usually use the word "content" instead of happiness for the reasons you just gave. Being content means that you are at peace with where you are, in what you have accomplished, in what you have, etc. I found growing up that I was always looking for the next challenge -- and that was fine. It kept me busy and striving toward something. As I got older and the accomplishments were had and there were less hills to climb, I found myself wandering because it left a hole in what I used to do and how I defined myself. At that point I realized that game had changed and I had to change my mindset. I am almost a little more energized when I have a trip or other activity coming up that I'm looking forward to, but that's not happiness. It's an opportunity to experience something new (hopefully) and that allows me to better appreciate the things I have experienced in life. As I look back and the fruits of my labor and my progeny, I usually smile and sometimes shake my head. I'd rather be content than happy.
