What is the oldest ongoing, unquenched "eternal" flame?

Something in the Tomb or the Unknowns thread prompted this thought. (Though I don't even know if they have one there).

Anybody know what "eternal flame" has been going the longest? I know the Romans had one or more but I think they tended to go out and I kind of doubt they survived the sackings by the Germanic tribes.

And I know they keep one for the olympics. In Greece I think. But I don't know how old that one is.

Actually it did survive. It's still burning. Go see it soon before the Muslims douse it though.

As a serious answer, I believe there is a flame at Varanasi, the holiest city in Hinduism, that may be what you're looking for.

Varanasi is THE place to be cremated in the Hindu faith.

But a coal seam 90 feet below the surface been burning for an estimated 5,500 years, making it the longest continuous fire on the planet.

I'll take Varanasi's reported 5,000 year old flame and all the spooky mysticism that goes along with it over some coal mine fire.

Though I do find that factoid interesting

This one has potential

The Door to Hell (also known as the Gates to Hell, the Crater of Fire, Darvaza Crater) is a natural gas field in Derweze, Turkmenistan, that collapsed into an underground cavern in 1971, becoming a natural gas crater. Geologists set it on fire to prevent the spread of methane gas, and it has been burning continuously since then. The diameter of the crater is 69 m, and its depth is 30 m.[1]

The crater is a popular tourist attraction. In the past five years 50,000 tourists have visited the site.[2] The gas crater has a total area of 5,350 m2, the size of an American football field. The surrounding area is also popular for wild desert camping.

Damn. Good find. Wonder if has really been burning 5000 plus years. (If it accidentally went out at any point I'm not sure they wouldn't just re-light it and not say anything ).

The Roman one in that the Vestal Virgins tended seems to have been ordered extinuished in 394 or something like that by the order of a Christian emperor.

And for those who pointed out stars or on earth, coal fires, etc - yeah I think they'd win if we counted natural fires.
