Certainly theres a band geek that posts here that can help us all understand wtf they were thinking.

no, I only use OEM.
I glop on the adhesive. What happens is, in install often people don't wait the full 24 hours to use it. If any fracture between the adhesive and the seal opens up, water gets in and ruins the bearings. It's not the bearing that causes the failure, it's the seal letting water to the bearing. I've never had a re-fail of a bearing replacement.
I generally put a plug on the customers's plug that cuts power to the washer. I tell them not to use it. If they call that day and say it doesn't work, I remind them they were supposed to wait a day to use it. The next day I call and tell them to un-plug their plug and throw away the "adapter" missing it's right prong that I put in the plug.
This $.95 hack has saved me so much in call backs because of customer error. The first seal I ever did the customer ruined in two hours.
Lucky i was a nice guy and was able to replace just the seal.
