What is the current opinion on MLA degrees?

I'm looking through resumes, and I came across one with a degree listed as Master of Liberal Arts, Extension Studies (Software Engineering). I realize this means it's an online degree, and could care less because I finished graduate school online. Would you give lesser weight to an MLA degree and what are they teaching in those types of programs?

It would depend on the position.

I'm looking for a junior software developer. He has little experience, so his degree would be the qualifier.

A true MLA is supposed to force you to think critically, outside of the box, and solve issues on a global scale. If he can do that, and has the technical skills you need, then he might be a good fit.

I guess the technical skills learned in that program would be my concern. I'll give him an interview and see what he knows. Appreciate it.

A liberal arts degree in engineering sounds like bullshite. Like a Bachelors of Arts in a science.

No problem.

Have you looked-up the course work for that program online? That would prolly tell you what you need to know pretty quickly.

What school did it come from? I've not heard of an MLA with a focus on software dev...

It definitely seems strange, but I'd love to see the courses.

I did. It looks like it focuses on high-level architecture, but I'm not a software engineer. I'll run it by my senior developer and see what he thinks.

Harvard.

That's the only reason I'm giving it a look, honestly.

It actually looks pretty legit...

Did this person have a technical background to begin with?

I have a buddy that got his Masters of Technology from MIT, and he helps them with their extension programs, so I know a lot of these have some chops. I think Harvard and MIT might cross-pollinate on these, actually.

Would you have any reservations about those doctors treating you?

That's what I was thinking. Might have to take some classes there myself.

He has the usual things I've seen from applicants with no experience: hobby work, internship, part-time jobs. I'll interview him and if he seems capable, I may take the chance on him.

Harvard.

Harvard does a week long course on Negotiation through their law school for about $8k. I almost want to do it just for the resume bullet point, and to be able to wear a Harvard Law t-shirt with some impunity.

Ah, Harvard extension school. It's a freaking racket, which is weird because it isn't like Harvard is hurting for the money. I don't know why they risk diluting the name brand this way.

Not sure if I'd call it that...

I know a few of the Ivie's have developed less expensive programs for people to be able to learn from Harvard, Dartmouth, Yale, etc. professors.

I'm sure they've considered this, and then found that it wouldn't. Again, from my understanding, you're still learning from Harvard professors, so there's really no dilution of the brand.

Now, if it was being run out of Boston Community College, and then Harvard slapped a logo on it and called it theirs...

It's not that bad but it's not true Harvard profs either. I just randomly pulled up a French course they offer, and the two teachers are some lady from Tufts and a guy who teaches only HE classes. I'm sure they're fine teachers but it's not as if you're getting the same professors that regular Harvard students get.

I will agree that it's definitely not the same as a true Harvard degree.
