What I'd like to know is why Florida uses numbers and letters to designate roads.

Pretty sure the A is for Alternate
This. The state number for U.S 98 is SR 30. 30a is essentially an alternate route for US 98 (SR 30).

We go there almost every year. It is absolutely nothing like that.
Sure if you stay with family and don't interact with anyone, you won't see it. Stay near any rentals, go out to eat, hit the beach, you see it. I've been maybe a dozen times meeting friends from Texas and LA and it IS like that. We meet there because it is the best place in the middle. Orange Beach is the box wine version of 30A and Gulf Shores is baby Daytona.
Just because you run around the panhandle with blinders on doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
I know there are a lot of LA and GA folks are on the board here but let's not act like 30A is Nice just because it's the nicest area within a reasonable drive.
I'm in Kissimmee equidistant between Tampa and Daytona and I almost always head east if want to hit the beaches. 30A is too quiet and too overrun with trashy, basic families.

Bruh, we interact with all kinds of people. Just admit you make stuff up, it’s ok and not a big deal.

I think most folks bitch about it now because it has become overdeveloped, overcrowded and touristy.
I'm old enough to remember the mom and pop motels and shady beach houses in the 80s. Sleepy and awesome.
To each his own.

How can you say anything negative about 30a and then mention Daytona? Preposterous
