Im not knighting for anyone. 4 day weeks have been a thing for decades, it’s not new.

I think it’s awfully high and mighty of a lot of you to constantly bash other professions yet make no mention of your own. Most teachers I know work year round. They may teach summer school, tutor, teach swimming lessons, pick up an extra job.

I don’t really give a shite, I just think there’s a ton of pretentious assholes on this board.

Not disagreeing with you but just was curious about your reasoning

Full disclosure: I’m a year round school proponent. And since I’m not the OP, also an unsolicited opinion.

I believe that year round school lessens the recovery time of re-learning old material from the previous year. I’m not advocating for more time in the classroom, just more evenly spaced time.

Also, with regard to schools in the South, it’s hot as shite. Why do we force families to vacation in the suckiest part of the year? “That’s the way we’ve always done it” blows in this instance. I hated it as a kid and still hate it as a father of elementary aged children.

I never had a winter vacation as a kid. I love the redneck riviera, but I’d love to take my kids on a winter vacation. In fact I’m taking my 8 year old on a hunting trip this November, school be damned. Hell, he’ll learn more in that week than he will in a month of school.

Not challenging you here, just stating my reasoning for agreeing with the OP.

ETA: on a tangent here with the year round school argument, but I feel it’s relevant.

1) I do
2) you ignorant fricks know nothing about half the professions you whine and complain about, so if I’m a slimy salesman I’ll brag like one too.

I don’t either. That was off the cuff stream of consciousness. I could have gone on another 20 points but ran out of gas.

You put that stream of conscience into clear and concise points that these clowns will ignore and accuse you of knighting for teachers.

Since I’m one of the larger insurance agents for small businesses in my area, quite a lot. Why is it ok for you to shite on whichever profession to make yourself feel superior, but you get your arse hurt about shift work?

Your vacation argument re: the South, and especially Louisiana, is not great since a ton of families go to the beach in the summer and also most have a couple weeks off for Christmas and New Years and another week for Mardi Gras and Easter

7th and 8th grade teachers won't go for a 4 day week.

that would give them 20% less time to seduce their students.

We are the only industrialized nation on the planet that does 5 day work weeks and 5 day school weeks. If we would go to a uniform 4 day work week where everyone worked 4/10's I guarantee production would go up nationwide in all lines of work. I'd do 4/10's in a gotdamn heartbeat.

If anything, we are an overworked society and have been for a minute.

ETA: I agree w/a couple of people earlier ITT who said that the school day should be shorter, especially for elementary kids, w/more emphasis on recess/PE then ramping up the workload as they get into middle/high school.

I have no hatred towards what anyone does for a living. At least they are working. every profession has shite heads, doesn’t mean that profession sucks. The constant threads about list your top slimiest professions every other week is pathetic.

Im sure you have a respectable career, I mean no harm with my plant worker jokes. A lot of my friends back home in Mandeville work various roles in plants and we always give each other shite

They get fricking 3 months off in the Summer, and another month of Holidays during the school year. An 8 month work schedule, and now they need a 4 day week? How fragile are these people? What they really need is year round school, and for teachers to have to pass a bi-yearly competence exam.... pass or be fired. PERIOD. The kids they are graduating can't read or do basic math... What a bunch of lazy, ineffective, whiners. Work year round like the rest of us, and do your damn jobs

quote:

These posts are so fricking stupid and completely ignorant of actual reality. Where to start:

1) teachers don’t get 3 months off a year. It’s closer to 2, but the better ones are working all year.

2) teachers don’t work 8-3. Their days don’t end when the 7th period bell rings. Most stay at school till 4 or 5 and then work another 2-3 hours at home working on lesson plans or grading papers

3) YOU think of teachers as babysitters, rather than actual educators

4) Because of 3, YOU vote down higher teacher pay, YOU stigmatize teachers as lazy whiners, which disincentives the people who would actually be really good teachers from pursuing that path as a career, which makes YOU responsible for for the self fulfilling prophecy of unqualified teachers becoming teachers. You saying painting them all as sucking and labeling them all as such, prevents the ones who wouldn’t suck from pursuing that path, leaving only the ones who do actually suck from taking the gig. Your attitude, based almost solely on sheer ignorance, creates the very attitude you loathe.

5) Twitter and Facebook are not real life. The teachers you see whining and validating your preconceived notions on social media make up a tiny fraction of actual teachers. The good ones don’t feel the need to exonerate themselves on there, because they’re secure in knowing they’ve done nothing wrong.

6) Like any profession, if you want better candidates, provide more incentives. Not just monetarily, but social status. If the children are out future, teachers should be paid and treated like the shepherds of that future.

7) A lot of teachers suck, but you’re just a fricking a-hole and sick worse.

8) And you’re a hypocrite. You know M-F/8-5 is not the most best way to get the most efficient results. Countless studies have proven that, but if you’re intellectually honest, you know it yourself. How much work are you actually getting done on Fridays? How much from 3-5 Monday through Thursday? Even if teachers were 100% locked in during those times, you know as an adult you’re checked out, so you think your kids aren’t going to be?

I taught a college freshman freshman course 1 semester as a GA. Kids were great. Because they chose that class and them or their parents were paying for it. I taught Jr. and Sr. High School American History for 2 years. At a Christian private school. I-2 years difference in age, but an enormous gulf in behavior. Because they knew they had to be there, and their shitty a-hole parents did a shitty job of raising them to not be shitty a-hole kids. Still, in 2 years, I never hear 1 single teacher complain. Because real life is not social media. And shitty a-holes like you are too dumb to know the difference.
