Britain's colonies outside of the US have never had primary interest in soccer. It's silly to assume that association football would have caught on here instead of gridiron in the late 1800s just because they held onto us longer.

For example:
Australia
Canada
India
Various African nations

since the muslims aren't using the same tactics as the british they might.

The British Empire lasted until after WWII. It continued expanding until about WWI. The American Revolution had little to do with British over-expansion and more to do with giving its North American colonies a lot of freedom and autonomy and then quickly taking those things away after the 7 years war created tighter budget issues. But the rest of the Empire was Jim Dandy.
