Yes, but the hope would be that the lack of genomic diversity would drive the virus towards error catastrophe, as RNA viruses like coronaviruses exist as a range of genomes in indivuals so there is room to respond to the environmental pressures sensitively, but also replicate as close to their error threshold rate as possible. The piecemeal strategy we ended up with wasted that small opportunity, and arguably expanded the genomic diversity of the virus, which can explain the slightly odd reinfection pattern.

Regardless, the chosen strategy made a specific molecular argument, which would only 'work' under a very specific set of circumstances. But the piecemeal strategy we ended up using was the worst of every world.

Can you provide a link for that? I looked and all I could find is that it was important that some doc found there were 3 strains of wild polio - basically the vaccine in 1955 was for one strain - in 1963 the vaccine for all 3 strains came out - and by the end of the ‘60s there were less than 100 cases
But I couldn’t find any stats about numbers between 1955 and 1963

Nah, I went to med school as an adult. Worked building houses with my dad, in a prison, in academia, and at a hospital. Didn't have to work or do anything due to family wealth, as my brother and sister don't do anything. Love the frick out of medicine though.
