Also, piece of advice when you make a design decision. Don't waste time with calcs and cost/benefit analysis etc if there are standards you can reference. That seems like really obvious info, but I got drilled by a review panel in the "draft" review of our project for doing something of my own design. Lots of questions I couldn't really answer since I had no experience and judgement.

Final presentation comes around and instead of hours designing something, I just copied the standard spec. When asked why, I said well such and such says use this for this application. I was told I had learned how the real world works and we got an A

Why wasn't tOT notified sooner, our specialists in the area of infrastructural studies must inspect these designs and the proper donations must be submitted before any bridge models are created; real, educational, lego, or otherwise...

The operational span of the bridge only needs to be over the shipping channel. its not like the entire width of the river needs to lift. Bascule that bitch from east side and the west side approach to the shipping channel, you'll be fine.

ETA:
I swear to god, if you design the traffic lanes to reduce to a single lane in a curve and then place an exit in the merging lane, I hope you die of gonorrhea

Man they really ramped up the capstone projects since I was at LSU. Ours was a subsurface drainage system, and a few years later I sat in on a presentation where their project was a new bridge on Chef Menteur. And now you need a drawbridge across the Mississippi? Jesus

A capstone project is the last or ultimate project in the program or class. We took a capstone course in business school that was meant to touch on just about everything we learned in business school

This. It's typically the culmination of not just the class but your degree program. For example when finishing my business degree our capstone project was completing a strategic analysis of a company. It had to include company history, analysis of financial statements from past 5 years, market analysis, etc. We then had to develop a short and long term strategic analysis and growth proposals. It needed to be around 75 pages in length and include two 30 minute presentations, one intended for potential investors and then on growth proposals to the company's c-suite. It was graded on both content and presentation quality. Companies were picked explicitly based on lack of these kinds of studies in the market so we really had to do legitimate research.

That covered the entire semester, and was generally a bitch. Not sure is designing a bridge is comparable or not. I'm not an engineer.

The company that we did wanted to hire me. I was the one that led the presentation and answered all the questions.

(I was also in my early 30s when I did business school, so I'd already been around the block.)

Maybe there are big savings to build a lower draw bridge, and maybe the need for that drawbridge to be in action isnt' very often.

I'm a computer systems designer not a bridge designer.

a draw bridge has moving parts. plus draw bridge needs an operator and a little place for the operator.

I think the project is much more challenging than a regular bridge.

IRL I skip the 75 pages, glance at the charts, read the executive summary and the footnotes.
