I think we can all agree that here in the US we have come to an impasse
The 60's and rest of the 20th century laughs at your "impasse."
The only thing we've come to are internet message boards, talk radio, talking heads, and social media blowing things out of proportion so you'll consume more of it.

How do you think another world war would effect the US?
It depends. If the enemy uses some of those electromagnetic pulse bombs then instantly we're back in the middle of the nineteenth century with kerosene lamps (we kept ours) and wood burning stoves. Gas stoves wouldn't function either since the whole gas pipeline delivery systems use sophisticated electronic controls. Pulse Bomb would fry those controls too. Most likely shutdown would not occur immediately in all regions of the country. Folks in small towns and RFD would fare better than their cousins in the big city and suburbs.
I'm convinced our enemies are planning for this. Started to say if you had a vintage 195X's Ford Crown Vic or Chev Bel Air with the old fashioned carburetor fuel system then you might be able to get around. That's if you can find a way to pump gas in the car using that fancy electronic pump at your local 7-11 Convenience Store down the street.
Basically the bomb would fry every digital / electronic device in your town. I mean technically you could build a single bomb capable of shutting down the whole world. So effective are these suckas. We're really vulnerable with this electronic control devices running everything from cars to washing machines to stoves.
