I grew up with depression era grandparents from east Alabama who not only grew their own sweet taters, but also made and delicious sweet tater pie with them.

Mississippi and North Carolina are major producers of sweet taters. It’s been a southern staple for centuries because it grows well in the heat and humidity. There are actually rumors they were first brought to America from Africa by slaves.

Sweet taters are as southern as, well, just about anything.
