For small things, a little eye contact and a small nod is cool. For larger things, pie is always nice.
That is for individual deeds. Doing a favor for the company that is outside of your job scope should be rewarded with cash.

Many times, the people who say "thank you" are doing the same thing. "Thank you," "excuse me," "pardon me," "good morning," "have a nice day," "have a blessed day," etc., are just the little bits of figurative oil that make our interactions go a little more smoothly. None are better than the others and, yes, they are just being polite and there's nothing wrong with that either.
