I'm 100% guilty of this. My parents, on the other hand, act somewhat below.

…upper middle class, also known as the top of the class. Members of this class tend to be well educated, hold post-secondary degrees and have high-paying, white-collar positions. This class is male-dominated, and has an income of $100,000 or more annually.

I'd say that is spot on

The link also states the median income level to be $50,054

Ah, fair point, and I don't necessarily disagree. My point is only that I personally consider one "upper class" when they don't meaningfully depend on the income generated by their job (of whatever type) to sustain their lifestyle.

my sister does for sure. that's like 75% of what being an artist is all about, though

my brother is developing it. that's like half of what living in lafayette is about, though

My dad was always right around the $100k mark, and my mom never worked until I hit high school. She makes about $40-$50k now (she got very luck being uneducated and out of work for 16 years and still finding a decent job). But I know people who make much less and act much higher than they do.

My dad is a big saver. He wants to leave the workforce soon and get a relaxing part time job and enjoy life. He plans to do it within 2 years.

But we've always driven used cars that weren't fancy.. mom cooked "family" meals every night.. we have family in Cajun country and the men wore blue jeans to weddings..

One reason I think I've changed from how they are is because I associated with mostly people from BR and Nola (not Central). My parents always kinda made fun of me for my taste/attitude though. I honestly have no idea how it came about.

Luckily, I'm dating up. And he is just as snotty about shite.

You're taking his comment out of context. He was referring to someone that stated that making $150k a year AND putting away at least $30k was the standard. That's a lot of money to save in a year on $150k.

The area where you live has so much to do with it. What I would see as upper middle class in this area would be defined as rich or upper class in a lot of areas of the country.

Agreed, so you'd have to add as a national aspect or not.

You would be better off or more likely at seeing the distinction in an area that has each true demographic. Like most of the major metropolises around the country.

Not to say one wouldn't be familiar in an area outside of those, just less likely.

Like you say, someone in one area might consider a guy with a million dollar home, cars, money as upper because that's top of mark. Where to another guy, you are talking about upper as someone who has significantly much more wealth than that, and not because of a cost of living difference.

Just about everyone who isn't "new money" 40 year olds do. Pretty much all well off people I know are not flashy at all. Aside from their homes, you really couldn't tell from the men in a casual setting. The women are the ones who will drive the jaguars/Mercedes/etc... The guys may have a nice car but they have a truck as a daily commuter.

This is my experience in south Louisiana. Obviously things are different in more "uppity" areas.

Combined or individual?

Let's say I make $150k and my wife makes $100k.

Am I considered upper middle and she's just middle?

Eta: what if I own my own business and I don't take much of a salary bc I run everything through my company and my net worth is over 1 million. However the wife takes a salary.

IMO your salary doesn't define your class. Your assets and net worth does.

one day you will learn that even from these areas, true upper class people are very rare and most of this is a front

Oh, of course. But my parents can be very backwoods about certain things. I love them for it though. I make fun of them.. they make fun of me.
