I know, but it's a scenario where they're making a bad situation worse.

Because he doesn't ring up cash sales and pockets it without paying taxes. Now you caused him to think you were paying with debit so he rang it up on the register. I use to work at a convenience store when I was a teenager and a seperate register was used for cash sales only.

This definitely sounds like your answer. Good to know. I go to a place like that all the time. They'll sell you a cigarette or a battery.

Was getting snacks at gas station. Take them over to the counter. Cashier (who doesn't speak English wonderfully well) asks me if I am using debit. I say yeah, sure, and as I'm pulling out my wallet, I see I have enough cash. So I count out the cash into the counter and I look up and the cashier slams his hand on the counter and is starring at me with such incredible fricking hate. We look at each other for like 10 seconds and then he says:

Cashier "that is disrespectful. You are disrespecting me."
Me: "huh?"
Cashier" you count the money while I'm putting the items in the bag."
Me: "what? Huh? I'm sorry, I don't really see what I did wrong and I didn't understand."
He says nothing.
Me: "what can I do?"
Cashier: "just forget it."
I tell him he can keep the change and leave.

I just don't think I've ever had someone look at me like that though and I have no clue why.

You should have hopped on the counter, pulled your pants down and shite on the counter. Then, say "Here's your disrespect mother fricker!"

nothing.

This shithead lives and works in america, he's not in fricking Delhi anymore. Putting cash on a counter isn't some personal insult to his family, and if he does see that as such then he needs to GTFO out of the fricking gas station cashier business.
