I think he's saying that there was no year 0. He's not wrong either.
quote:
In the AD year numbering system, whether applied to the Julian or Gregorian calendars, AD 1 is immediately preceded by 1 BC. There is no year "0" between them, so a new century begins in a year which has "01" as the final digits (e.g., 1801, 1901, 2001).

When you celebrate your 1st birthday you are starting your 2nd year of life.

The Farmers' Almanac LINK agrees that 2021 is the start of the next decade.
If you’re still having trouble wrapping your head around this, think about it another way. Count to 10. Where did you start and finish?

So you skip years ending in 0?

I was already 35 by the time you were born. Born in 52, so in 2021 I'll be negotiating my 8th decade.

Correct, so we started time after Christ in the 2nd year with 1 AD. It's semantics to me though. It's not how we celebrate it and who knows how accurate the calendars from this time were.

Born in 1980. I'll be starting my 5th decade at midnight.

Right so 100 years would start at 101, 2 thousand at 2001 etc.
