Alec Murdaugh was THE cool Dad, until he wasn't.

The parameter is you best be able to plausibly deny you knew it was occurring unless you and the other kids parents are on that sort of terms.

What are you baws rules for teenagers drinking at your house or on a trip?
maybe that's a question you should have asked Juniors friends parents...

Are you admitting to contributing to the delinquency of a minor at your home? What else are you doing behind closed doors?
It’s legal actually in all but 5 states for a minor to drink in the presence of a guardian on private property

The rule is simple. If you want to let your kid drink early to get a feel for it in the safety of your home. Fine. If you allow underage kids to drink and you bought the liquor you are setting yourself up for all kind of problems. A lot of things can happen and just about all of them are bad and you would and should be held responsible. So go ahead and be the cool dad. Prison is not as bad as it used to be.

My grandpa gave me my first sip of beer when I was 3. I didn't have alcohol touch my lips again until I was in college. We allow our kids an occasional drink. They've been going with me to football games since each turned 10. It was understood what was allowed if I set a beer down near them and turned my back.
I think taking the "taboo" out of it eliminates negative consequences like going elsewhere and driving home...or being driven home by a drunk driver. My wife loves ciders and they usually get a bottle.
As long as they aren't overconsuming or leaving where they are drinking I think it's worth having a chill discussion with those involved and if you believe there's a bigger issue, act accordingly.

I haven’t read this entire thread, but I wouldn’t look down on a 18 year old drinking. If the sucker is old enough to die for his country he is old enough to drink. I couldn’t let it happen within my bounds of responsibility though.

18 and over, drink all you want…just no driving. It’s not like if you say no, they won’t drink

This is my take as well. Everyone is different and has different life experiences to base their opinion on this matter. One factor I always remember is the first few weeks of Freshmen year in college - I remember a few kids who had never been exposed to alcohol and it was a disaster for them - including an ambulance ride for one guy. My kids are still young but I feel like I would at least want them exposed to it before going to college so they would know, at least a little, how to handle it in moderation and when to stop. But that's just my opinion.
I would never furnish to someone else's kid though, unless it was a good friends child and he knew and we both understood the parameters.
I had a friends dad who would let us in high school but would take our keys to start the night and hide them. Whereas my dad would have never allowed it and I had to sneak around. In retrospect, I think I was much safer at my friends house with no keys.

If it's lawyers that are deterring you from allowing underage drinking you might want to do some reflection

Had my first beer at 16. Lots of friends starting drinking after Homecoming freshman year of High school around age 14.
Can’t deny them or they will end up being mischievous and doing bad things.
I’d say 2-3 brews under supervision at age 15
