Ilk say this. Us, the parents, might be the main reason. We are so busy, it's much better having a method of constant contact with my kids. But you keep using the term "cellphone". I wanted mine to have a smartphone. They need the alarm clock, calendar, calculator, and many of the apps...it's a different world and they need to learn things we didn't. My daughter is from a previous marriage. When she is with her mom, I Skype with her nightly, eliminating the need to contact her thru her mother...and the same goes when she is with me.
I also do not keep a home phone anymore.
Here's my question or point. Times change. We had things our parents didn't and we also had the earlier than our parents.
Texting is a tremendous help with the kids as well. One quick group text and everyone is on the same page.
All parents involved have access to the phones and any passwords.
Contrary to the stigma, both of my kids are extremely active in sports, they don't sit around playing on the phone. They do have the phone to communicate changes, pickups, etc. They both go to a top school and were more than ready to operate the device.
I haven't had a negative issue yet and have gained many benefits from them having the devices.

I got my first cell phone when I was 13, 7th grade. It was an old minute flip phone. The only use of it was to call my parents to come pick me up from school/friends house/emergency reasons. I didn't get my first smart phone until I was 17, or a junior.
But now-a-days kids start much younger. My 8 year old nephew has a better phone than me. At 8 years old I didn't even know how to use a phone

Still trying to figure that one out seven years later. Kids are still trying to figure it out as well.

I can not possibly fathom leaving your children
It takes a special kind of woman to do so

It's not that much different than having a second landline like back in the day. I got my own landline at my parents house when I was in middle school.
Cell phones now are probably cheaper than adding a second line was back then.

I got mine when I was 18 and rocked a pager before that.

Always used a pager and payphone until I was forced to switch up. Kids are wild nowadays. Products of the rat race today and lack of parental responsibility.

I didn't get one till I was 21 years old. My boys aren't getting one till they start mowing the damn grass.

Had caller ID and the whole 9 yards.

I look at my phone far far too often. No way I'm getting my kids hooked on these devices. We don't know enough about how it affects development.
I will seriously take this whole show to the hills before I give in on stuff like this.

Indeed. Last one will be exiting college in Dec, and then I get to wind down a little. House is going to get a bit lonely after he graduates.
I still have some good years left and plan to enjoy them.
Taking us back to the original conversation, our "cell phone" back in the early 70"s was a cb radio along with an occasional payphone. Parents actually kept up with us on those things. LOL

Kids next door both have them. She's in kindergarten and he's 3. Unbelievable.

We got our son his first cell phone late last year and he's in 6th grade. It's one of those "add a line" for $10 flip phones that does nothing more than make calls and send texts.
We live in a sub-division and he keeps if with him when he's outside with his friends. It makes it easy to call him in for supper and things like that. He also takes it with him on sleep-overs, or at least when he remembers to take it. A lot of times he forgets it.

Yeah, that's dumb but, I would imagine that's for the games and not at all fir the talking. My daughter had an iPod when she was in 2nd. It was stolen from a swim meet last summer and a new one was 400 or I could get the exact same thing except with a signal (iphone) for $1 and $10 per month. No brainer!
