There are 2 steps we should take IMMEDIATELY which would make their jobs safer, infinitely safer, and make it less difficult.

The first is they need to stop doing no knock raids at the wrong fricking address. You would think it would be a fairly easy thing to do but no, they do it, according to most experts, hundreds of times a year across the country. They really ought to stop doing them at all but if they just feel like they can't do their job any other way make sure the damned address is right. They ain't delivering a pool float from Amazon they are engaged in some seriously dangerous (to them and the residents) shite, you'd think they would make a concerted effort to make sure they do it at the right house. I am certain they feel like they are making that effort but it keeps happening over and over again. If I were a cop I would stand back and let the morons who want to first through the door get ALL of that glory....in fact I would ALWAYS question the wisdom of kicking someone's door in anytime I was tasked with doing so....because it is about as aggressive an act as the state takes in the US and as we all know there are an awful lot of guns in the US....I ain't kicking nobodies door in, thats just me.

The second thing is stop with the fricking high speed driving, especially in inclement conditions. It is insane. Remover the number of cops killed or injured in the US in auto accidents every year and the job is safer than about the 50 most dangerous jobs in the US. Remove no knock warrants and its about the 75th. Keep them and it doesn't crack the top 25. Both are simply insane.

I’ve had this conversation with a friend who is a cop, and the likes to point out that there are a few bad apples in every profession.

The difference is in other professions the good apples will report the bad apples to stop them and with the police the good cops do nothing, or worse lie and falsely imprison innocent people to protect the bad cop.

So, to take your generality to its logical conclusion, we should never read about cops getting arrested.

Those insecure narcissistic mental midgets are exactly the ones that GAF!
Thats the reason they become police officers, is because they think people will like them and respect them.

Any cop that allows another cop to break the law is not a good cop and they all break the law!

the measure of success should be conviction rate

It already is. This is why you have dirty cops and DAs planting evidence and coercing witnesses. They often times don't care about right or wrong or injustice or community well-being as long as they get that conviction so that they have record of being tough on crime. That's how they get promoted and reelected. Most cops are the psychopath assholes and bullies and it's mostly due to the reasons you mentioned. I believe that most go into that career with good intentions but they get caught up in a negative spiral when dealing with the public day in and day out. The current system is not conducive to honest behavior.

This is only when they fail at the job we should expect of them, preventing crime, and actually have to arrest someone and they did not prevent a crime. And this measure should be tempered by the number of convictions who stay convicted and aren't granted a new trial based on their shenanigans and most importantly not simply released because they were obviously not guilty when convicted. Any way you slice it an arrest is a failing of the system....because it should ALWAYS mean a crime was committed (it doesn't) and when there is a crime there is almost always a victim, always one when you consider society as a whole as the victim of supposed victimless crimes.
