Regardless of the reasons of why either practice started, female circumcision is barbaric. There are no known health benefits, it can cause a lot of painful complications and one of the somewhat recent studies shows that women who are circumcised are twice as likely to report no sexual desire (and over 50% reported that intercourse was painful).

Male circumcision does not deprive a male of an essential part of his sexual life and studies show basically no difference in sexual satisfaction. Also, there are health benefits. Uncircumcised males are more likely to get sexually transmitted infections and and their partners are more likely to get cervical cancer.
