West Carroll mom accused of murdering baby boy

A West Carroll Parish mother has been charged with the murder of her infant son after she was found passed out on her baby.

West Carroll Parish Sheriff's Department deputies responded to a call regarding the incident at 2:05 p.m. Monday.

When emergency medical services and law enforcement arrived at the scene, the infant was unresponsive on the couch. EMS personnel checked the baby for vitals and none were found.

A coroner later pronounced the infant dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation revealed Cynthia Marie Sciortino, 38, was under the influence of drugs and alcohol while she was the sole and primary caretaker of the baby boy.

When a search warrant was executed, illegal narcotics and empty liquor bottles were found in the home. Sciortino reportedly told deputies she used drugs and alcohol.

A blood sample was taken from the suspect for a toxicology test through the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.

Sciortino was booked on charges of possession of a schedule II controlled dangerous substance, second degree cruelty to juveniles and second degree murder.

Sciortino was also booked on additional misdemeanor warrants for jumping bail and cyberstalking.
