Maybe it's like dogs. Owning 2 is easier than one because they entertain and comfort each other. Dogs do better in packs than they do solo.
I imagine having a second wife could be beneficial in that regard because the wives can comfort/console/empathize with each other better and basically deal with each other's shite. Of course I could be 100% wrong and this situation simply means double the bullshite.
