Dunno if its been mentioned but allcast is an awesome new app that streams local content from your phone to either a Chromecast or xbox connected to your TV.

Allcast sucks...Koush is famous for adding new features without fixing his app problems..Bubbleupnp works 100x better

I just don't get the hate when you appear to not even know Plex has the ability to direct play files and you can get a very nice experience without ever giving them a dime.

is it? because it looks like its $4.99 for the app and then all kinds of 'in app' pricing gotchas to use all the functionality not to mention having to install more crap on my PC.

i hate shite like that.

go read the reviews..they now want a monthly $$$ to keep up with their services so you can have chromecasting capabilities and you have to install more shite on your PC to talk to it.
They lifted the "chromecast only for subscription" option...It doesn't require it as of a week or so ago

think of it as akin to taking the training wheels off a bicycle.

by default apple, google & microsoft ship phones with limited access to do everything the hardware is capable of.

stuff like tethering (allowing you to use your phone as a wifi hotspot), things as simple as changing the color of the interface, having a button to 'reboot' your phone, access to the system so you can swap the camera app, etc. are not allowed.

only google can fix those things if they have problems and you're not rooted.

so you sit and wait for cosmic justice to fix your battery drain issue.

-- OR --

rooting essentially allows you full access to the hardware to make changes.

for instance, the stock nexus 5 camera app is shite. but someone on XDA wrote a BEAUTIFUL replacement for it.

so when i got my N5, the first 4 things I did:

- unlock & root it (toolkits do this seamlessly)
- install f-droid and adaway
- delete my camera & install the good one

then i started putting apps on it.

Make sense?

PS its practically impossible to hurt your phone by rooting it..at most you lose all your data so always back up anything you care about first.

C'mon. You want me to believe all your BR rips are from discs you own as well?

Luckily, there are kind folks that pay for monthly, yearly and lifetime memberships so I can enjoy these services....for free.

Totally understandable, but I'm cheap, so I wait.

what does that have to do with prefering a free app that allows me access to my PC media files without nagware, ads or having to install more crap on my PC. i put as little on my PC as possible.

Rooting is like giving yourself administrator rights for your phone. You can delete apps and system files that you would not normally be able to delete, like bloatware (or you can use Titanium Backup to freeze them, if you are worried about receiving future updates).

It also allows you to install apps that require root (administrator) privileges. Apps like the ad blockers or titanium backup.

Rooting also allows you to install or "flash" custom ROMs. Like if you have a Samsung device and don't like Touchwiz, you can install something else.

Yeah, I like it. Infinitely easier to clear useless emails.

Apparently the next update to the app will allow for than one account.

I hear a lot of bitching about the N5 camera, and understand whatever the issue is software and not hardware. I've been a N5 uxer for about a month and a half and don't notice anything wrong with the camera. What is it that irks you about it? Also, what ROM are you using? I've been a big fan of CyanogenMod in the past. Thinking about going that direction when I do swap out ROMs.
