“(m)odern” in comparison to what? Not our Navy. What they’re building are the equivalents of us having New Jersey class battleships (obviously not literally but figuratively) in 1950.

Great for beating every other Navy except the one you’ll be going to war with.

Four $2 Million each unmanned DARPA products will sink/render useless a $750M Chinese capital ship.

I like math and those odds.

A lot of this sounds like the 1920s and 30s when everyone was laughing at Japan...

If you weren't so retarded on the relevant history, you'd remember that air superiority won more Naval engagements than anything else. There's a reason why our Navy is built around aircraft carriers, advances in missile technology rendered large guns obsolete decades ago. China is pumping out low-quality frigates for a war it would never come close to winning on the oceans, we stopped building frigates because they are useless.

China can’t get out of its first island chain with its bajillion little boats. The U.S. Navy will be fine.

And Japan would take out half of it before we'd even have to commit one ship.

They count anything towards their hulls and tonnage numbers. Odds are they do not have fuel to get into a battle forcing maneuvering. China is a huge paper tiger that still needs the US to guarantee their energy and food imports.

Right, but they are exactly the same type of ship the PLAN is building an inflating their ship count.

It would take decades to rebuild our industrial capability to be able to build even half the ships the Chinese are pumping out.

This is a huge problem. If a big war on the Pacific kicks off, we’re fricked from a naval standpoint.

I remember back in the 80’s when the Falkland Islands war touched off and the dreaded French Exocet missile was available it was pretty much a widespread strategy that conventional navy ships were obsolete because they could be destroyed from a long way off in a short amount of time.

Fast forward to today the new Navy is highly sophisticated with anti missile and torpedo defense along with highly effective offensive weaponry that can eliminate all threats under the face, on the surface, and above the surface.

Look at how many enemy targets a single missile frigate can track and engage. My point being that a large navy fleet on conventional ships could be at the bottom of the sea in an hour in today’s warfare scenarios.
