Weapons with which my friends and I are competent. .308 Winchester and .30-06 are sufficient to take dangerous, bear-sized game with proper shot placement.
I can have all the .50 and .338 Lapua I want, but those platforms are for killing at a significant range. They also require a lot of trigger time to master. They are almost always employed from a rest. They cannot be redeployed as quickly as a lighter, more mobile rifle. I suspect these bear encounters are going to be 100 yards or closer.
I would consider an AR-10, frankly. Gives me great portability, move it with me, decent range with optics and rapid follow up shots. Or 12 gauge and 000/slugs.
I don't want to rely on a pistol, except as a backup (better than nothing) and you just go with the heaviest bullet that is practical in .50 AE (or S&W) or .44 Magnum.

Common sense. Almost all human/wild animal altercations are completely avoidable if you are aware of your surroundings, you are not negligent with your campsite, and you aren't a complete fricking retard. If a grizzly is going to attack me, nothing will stop it, and it is more than likely my own fault.
But for the sake of your thread, I would want my Beretta A300 12 gauge semi-auto with as many rounds of OOOBuck I can fit in it.
