I picked that price range because I don't want to go all in and regret buying a watch. It's a gradual thing. I just never liked wearing watches.
I did the same thing. I knew I wanted an automatic, but wanted something cheap first. I bought the seiko skx173, which is basically the skx007. I never take it off. It's +\- 3 seconds a day which is solid for any automatic, let alone one under $200. Looks good on rubber, NATO or steel.

Check out the Seiko SRPA29 on Amazon. It's a prime day deal and is a good watch.

Shoot. A seiko 5 for like $60 is pretty good for what it is. I hear they even keep pretty good time. It just isn't worth actually getting service work done on it, unless you have sentimental attachment for it.
Yep. I've got one that averages <1s/day slow. Granted it swings between about +/-4s but I'm still more than happy for a watch that cheap.

Do NOT buy a quartz or eco-drive. It must have a manual or automatic movement.
It MUST have a sapphire Crystal, no mineral glass crap. (this is hugely important).
In your price range, you should look at the Seiko Monster series, which can be had at $300 -$400 range.

Shop for a used Rolex. Will hold its value.
I want to see what a $300 Rolex looks like.

Just ordered this watch. Thanks for the heads up!

You're just being a little snobby about this. I have read some people say the same thing you are saying about watches in the $1000-$3000 range. At any price point there are products that are bad value and others that give at least some bang for the buck.
Oh I definitely am.

For exampl. Seiko or citizen or even your g shock are at least made by watch companies that make quality products and fossil and Michael Kors are fashion watches that are entirely style over substance, not that there's necessarily a ton wrong with that, especially at those prices.
The fashion watch is basically my suggestion at this price point. You're not going to get an impressive time piece here, so pick the one you think looks best and go from there. Save some money now and you're that much closer to a significant watch you can keep forever.

Nicely done. Now you've got $175 (~10%) towards your first Nomos Glashutte.
