Anyone have any experiences to share? How much is your download speeds slowed and it looks like you need a fairly high-dollar router to be compatible. Seems like a good idea to keep your internet traffic anonymous, but not sure if it's something I really need or not.

The govt already knows what you are doing online.

For those with gigabit internet connections I would like to know if your speeds were greatly reduced with specific vpn's.

It's mostly latency that suffers. Bandwidth should be fine.

I've seen a lot of articles lately stating VPNs are largely obsolete now.

Opinions?

Encryptions on every packet will inherently slow down "speed" but the higher the bandwidth and faster the processing on both ends, the less you'll notice.

I have a VPN with Norton.

It does slow down speeds some.

I also have to turn it off to log on to some websites.

Obsolete, no. Far from it.

100% effective like they used to be? No. Too many other crawlers and keyloggers and whatnot out there. If device or application is compromised by, say, the CIA or some other criminal organization, the VPN doesn't do you much good. The VPN only protects your data in traffic. Think about your data like a car. The VPN will keep you from getting carjacked at a stop sign, but it won't keep your car from getting stolen from your driveway.

With consumer software VPNs you can generally expect at least a 30% drop in speed. No consumer VPN can handle a full gig connection that I am aware of. You would need to look into an enterprise hardware VPN to get close to that.

But not many homes have those true speeds. I know I don't.

I use NordVPN and haven't noticed any degradation in speed.

Definitely not obsolete. It really depends on what you’re trying to mitigate. What’s your purpose for using one?

I use VPN to watch out of market games in every sport and it’s simple and gets the job done
