I know the OT followed the VW emissions rigging scandal. Looks like the FBI just stepped things up a notch.

quote:

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has arrested a Volkswagen executive on charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States, the New York Times reported on Monday.

Oliver Schmidt, who headed the company's regulatory compliance office in the U.S. from 2014 to March 2015, was arrested on Saturday by federal investigators in Florida, the newspaper said, citing people familiar with the matter.

VW admitted in September 2015 to installing secret software known as "defeat devices" in 475,000 U.S. 2.0-liter diesel cars to cheat exhaust emissions tests and make them appear cleaner in testing. In reality, the vehicles emitted up to 40 times the legally allowable pollution levels.

I thought they just fudged the MPG numbers. I didn't realize it was as bad as reported here.

quote:

Senior VW officials are not attending this year's Detroit auto show, which is taking place this week. The news comes as Volkswagen was nearing a deal to resolve criminal and civil allegations over its diesel cheating, crucial steps toward moving past the scandal, which has cost it billions of dollars and its reputation.

Who wants to bet the "senior executives" are hiding out some place that doesn't extradite to the US?

Seems pointless now that Trump is about to be Pres. Those emissions will be the standard if not lower than the allowable coming this year.

I'm okay with this. Most of us think income taxes are stupid, but we are not okay with people cheating their way out of them.

Our emissions rules may be ridiculous for diesel engines, but that does not make it okay to defraud consumers. A lot of VW's competitors did not offer diesel options for compact cars because they could not match VW's fraudulent numbers.

IMO this scandal was a pretty big indictment on VW's corporate culture. They actually designed a cheat and then built a huge part of their market on it.

This is punishment for not succumbing to extortion. The VW situation was taken care of long ago. This is white collar crime with rich people - no need for arrests. You call the attorney, he has client surrender, released, plea, fine, probation, done deal.
