Video to DVD transfer

One of my projects over the holiday (translation: my wife told me to get this done) is to transfer a number of videotapes to DVD. Some are the small cassettes that go in a camcorder but some are actual VHS tapes from the early 90's that I need to transfer while I can. Anybody have a place they have used or know of that can perform such a service. Any ideas on cost?
Some of this I can do myself but would rather pay somebody else assuming it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

We were talking about this yesterday with the family and someone mentioned you can buy a DVD/VHS player and do it yourself. Not sure if that is true or not.

If you have more than several and you are somewhat conversant in the world of computers you will want to do this yourself. If you do so, it's my understanding that the transferral process is 1:1 in real time of your desired video media to be transferred. That means if you have 80 hours of videos it will take you at least 80 hours to transfer them to a digital format on a single hard drive.

You can buy an expensive piece of hardware that comes as a tape deck looking thing that can do it. It will convert to digital files.
You can also send it off and have people do it.
There's some products out there that can do it to DVD, but they will probably transfer a lot of old media to DVD or CD as well, so you'll be paying a lot for other things like 8mm or slides from carousels, and film.
The choice is yours!

There are a couple of places in Baton Rouge that can do it. Kadairs and randywheeler.com

Walgreen's does conversions. Go talk to the people at one of their photo labs.

I'd get me a huge storage drive (terra bytes) and put all of the raw footage on that and then edit from there individual DVDs.
A 4TB External HD from Western is $114, I'd probably get two exactly the same and mirror both of them for redundancy and security.

I bought a vhs and DVD player/recorder deck and did this s few years ago. Not hard at all, but it does take a lot of time. You have to play all the tapes so that the recorded can save it. I believe SAMs and Costco can both do the the transfer.
If you're in Baton Rouge I'll be happy to let you borrow the equipment. All you'll need to buy is the recordable DVDs. It does take time and you have to catch it as each tape comes to an end so pause the DVD recorder to then que up the next tape. You'll be able to put 6-10 tapes on each DVD.
For the mini tapes, you'll have to pay it from the camcorder into the DVD recorded via cables.
Unless you like tinkering with with this type of project, I'd pay to have it done.

It would be cheaper to do it yourself. There are a few places in BR who do this. Try Quantum Video, data transfer or Kadairs. If you have a bunch of tapes call each company with the number of tapes and ask for a price quote. It can be pricy.

good to know. I have about 50 old UGA games on VHS that I'd love to convert. I have a VHS/DVD combo so it seems a no brainer I could do it myself. But when I first tried to do it, the finished DVDs I came out with would only play on that player. I couldn't get them to play on other DVD players no matter how many times I fiddled with the settings and tried to figure it out. At this point I'd like to just dump them off on someone and let them do it for me.

Yes there are still VHS DVD players that also copy from VHS to DVD on the market at fairly low prices. I have one myself and they work like a charm . You do have to play them while recording to DVD, but you can just flip over to TV and watch that while you are transferring. Not hard at all.

What's a ball park figure to have someone do about 20 VHS tapes?

You order from them, they send you a box with a prepaid label, you fill the box with any format and they return DVDs, thumb drives, and your original stuff.
I'm using them and I'll let you know, but the reviews were excellent.

please do update us with their prices and your opinion of the final product.
Also, all my VHSs were recorded between 1996-2008, so obviously the quality is going to be pretty poor on some. Will the conversion help with that at ALL or will is still look like crap?

Legacy Box
Mine are about the same vintage, and the quality is just mediocre. A lot of the tape is Super 8 and mini DV that never got around to putting on VHS.
I'll update when I get the DVDs back.
