Disabled vet classification is too loose to honor.

Purple Heart classification has a lot more substance

Untrue. You can get a purple heart for pretty much anything. A scratch. A skinned knee. I've seen people get purple hearts for being near IEDs and getting hit with debris (rocks and dust) that didn't leave a scratch.

There are 2 veterans at my work with handicap plates who are 100% not handicapped in any way. Doesn’t really bother me at all, but it is weird. Small reward for such a huge sacrifice I guess.

i didnt read anything past the first post in this thread, but i just wanted to chime in that OP is a thousand per cent correct and scamming veterans disgust me.

one caveat - not everyone who is healthy and receiving 100% is doing it maliciously. even if you dont WANT to get a rating like that, the system doesnt really allow you to opt out.

Used to you got 10% disabity for having been on jump status. IDK if that's still true.

There a difference between 100% disabled, permanent and total as opposed 100% disabled, unemployable.

But how do you what it takes for a 100% disabled vet to do, in order to cope with the issues they have? I know some that are fine up front... but it's what you don't see that's scary.

Thanks OP for shitting on vets.... yet thanking them for their service at the same time.

Why do you think anyone should get a free pass to do bad shite? You should hold everyone to the same standard, unless of course, you’re a hypocrite

OTOH it's a running joke how the VA rules injuries not service connected when they clearly were.

No. But you can use it as justification to claim something like back or knee pain. Doesn't mean you will get it.

being a vet doesnt give you a lifetime pass for any and all behavior. this bullshite attitude is why the stupid system is so out of control with scamming because anytime someone tries to address it they get shouted down as SHITTING ON VETS, which has in turn led way to many vets to thinking they are somehow untouchable

You do realize that a soldier cannot put themselves in for a purple heart... right? I've seen CDRs put soldiers in for awards that meet the criteria, even though the soldier doesn't feel it's deserved.

it's a running joke with very little connection to reality.

might be true for lower enlisted ranks. but officers and senior enlisted can easily skirt this and hook each other up. there are tons of bullshite PHs out there. i know of many firsthand.

Because dickhead... when you use the term, VET, you're referring to ALL of them. And unless you've been there and done that... just sit down. If you have and you're getting VA COMPENSATION, because it's not a VA Disability... then great. If you're not, have not and never plan to... then just sit down.

It’s pretty common and not hard to get on VA disability

The best friend I ever had other than my wife or father was rated about 70% disabled if memory serves from a back injury he sustained in Vietnam. Not sure what happened but I know he had some back trouble. We were working together on a federal project when he slipped and fell down a flight of wooden steps that were wet. He certainly fell down them, 20-30 people witnessed it, and he was hurt when it happened....was carried to the hospital in an ambulance. So he was hurt somehow in the military, documented, and he was hurt pretty badly as it turned out in an industrial accident, again, very well documented. The federal government workers comp refused to pay because he was partially disabled in the army and of course the army refused because he was certainly injured at work. Wound up with about half a mill in medical bills and about that much in lawyer bills...never collected a dime, never had a medical bill paid....so the patients who paid their bills of cours paid his also because there aint no free lunch. Meanwhile the VA decides since he is most assuredly hurt and not getting better they are going to prescribe him some opioids to cope with the pain...and everybody knows what happened to this poor bastard at that point. When I bailed him out of jail for operating a vehicle while impaired he and I both knew he was approaching the end....its is about as sad a story as one can imagine and it happens far too often. Eventually he succumbed to opioids....under very questionable circumstances I won't go into because I know some of his family have been on these forums in the past and the circumstances are such that they are at serious odds with one another.

The short of it is he was disabled in the army, later was injured at work....none of this was ever denied....had insurance up the arse but none of it paid a penny because the courts took about 20 years to discuss who might be responsible and meanwhile the VA prescribes him what amounts to heroine and it eventually kills him. Every time I think about I get pissed all over again. I can only imagine what his family has to say about the VA or the agency he worked for when he was injured.

It’s one of the biggest scams going.

They can serve 20 years, retire with a military pension AND 100% disability, then go work for the federal government for 20 years and retire with social security AND a federal pension.
