Never had it but I remember people using it. I never understood this technology. Was it a marketing gadget or did it provide actual benefits to users? Was it just some 70's nostalgia CB radio gimmick?

I remember people that had it telling me that the closer to an interstate they were the better the signal... maybe it was bouncing off CB antennas or something?

From what I remember, push to talk was free, whereas actual calls ate into your minutes. So people used push to talk a lot.

Users would have still been using the network though. I guess the amount of bandwidth was small enough to warrant making it free.

obviously it had benefits. When I was about a jr/sr in high school you weren't shite if you didn't have a nextel with ptt on it.
And yes it had benefits. IIRC texting didn't really become a "thing" until a few years later. So if you just wanted to ask someone "we're meeting at 7 right?" you could chirp them and get an answer back in 5 seconds instead of having to call them. And as mentioned it didn't use minutes.

I just remember everyone having yellow sprint/nextels. It was the rage among my more redneck classmates in HS. I guess they liked having them clipped to their carhartts to feel more like manual laborers
