The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt is a World War II-era fighter aircraft produced by the American company Republic Aviation from 1941 through 1945. It was a successful high-altitude fighter, and it also served as the foremost American fighter-bomber in the ground-attack role. Its primary armament was eight .50-caliber machine guns, and it could carry 5-inch rockets or a bomb load of 2,500 lb (1,100 kg). When fully loaded, the P-47 weighed up to 8 tons, making it one of the heaviest fighters of the war.

My favorite WWII fighter.

What is the reason for the barrels not all being the same length coming out of the wings?

Probably room for the ammo belts.

ETA: nice job, Darth

That to allow room for the .50 cal ammo belt feeds.

Very nice.
The black stripes on the rudder and horizontal stabilizers were to help distinguish the Jug from FW-190s.
USAAF did the same thing when the first P-51s came along

The Jug could soak up some abuse.

Now that, I did not know. It boggles my mind anyone could mistake a P-47 for anything. They were gargantuan compared to other fighters, especially German fighters. Here’s the P-47 I just completed next to a FW-190 I built a few months ago…

The P-47D was much larger. Still, I guess the fact these fighters were zooming by at extremely high speed, that probably effected identification.

Indeed. They were legendary for coming back with battle damage.

Yeah, a quick flash of a radial engine fighter. It happens.

I remember hearing somewhere about gunners on B-17 talking about how they never saw fighters for more than a couple of seconds. They’d zoom in with guns blazing and then they’re gone.

That's why "Never point your nose at the bombers" was solid advice.

The Air Force painted up an A-10 (also officially named the Thunderbolt) to honor its grandfather from WWII.
