I am looking for a mid size truck for my teenage son. This will be his first vehicle. I have looked at several Toyota Tacoma’s and I really like them. I was hoping to find something with less than 100K miles in the $10-12K range. Everything that I am seeing on these Tacoma’s is closer to $15K with 150K miles. KBB backs up these prices. I have found a very nice 2010 model pre runner with 145K miles for $14K. It has new tires and has been well maintained and garage kept. Can I expect to get another 100K miles on this vehicle and is that a decent price?

I wouldn't get a truck like that older than 4 years. More shite will go wrong, and for what you spend fixing it, you could have just gotten one 3 years old.

I had a Tacoma, and loved it years ago. Solid as they come, but 145k is a lot of miles at the end of the day. I'd get something newer with less miles.

Bought a Taco with 110 and it now has 130. Trouble free.

I'd try to go a little newer than 2010 for the sake of maintenance.

We’re talking about a kids first vehicle...and a Toyota at that.

OP. Find a 2004 Tundra with 175-200k miles.

I finally got rid of my Tacoma in 2011 after 10 years.

The 2010 Model looks pretty good still on the road today.

OP For first truck for a teenager, even with 145k, it would work.

Bought my teenage son a 2004 Taco Prerunner with 152k about 7 months ago. Been solid so far. Went with older model because of insurance cost for a teenager.

Of course this is the OT, so insurance cost is something for poors to worry about.

If you are dead set on a Tacoma, you are gonna pay a little bit. Those things hold their value big time.

FWIW, at least half of the Tacomas in my circle of friends have went close to 300k or over (at least 5) without major repair. If you can verify the service and find a 1 owner (look closely underneath for off-road abuse), get the Tacoma. It will hold its value and stay on the road.

Honestly, you can count on 250K out of any modern truck, so I wouldn't limit my search to Toyotas. All truck hold value like crazy, so you are going to drop a little cash for anything you would want to own.

Yes, Tacos hold their value. They are hard to find, especially the 1st Gen models. The one I bought was located in Alabama. 1 owner vehicle out of west Texas. Look for one from southern states, these older vehicles have frame rust problems, but mostly in northern climates where they salt roads.

I bought from Captain Ron's Auto in Saraland. Just north of Mobile. He is an ex Air Force Captain and sells mostly Toyota trucks. Google is your friend for a look at his current inventory. I would buy from him again.

I did a lot of research on tacos. Google tacomaworld. Good website with lots of info on tacomas.

Look at the older model tundras. Or if he is ok with an SUV instead of a truck, the older generation sequoias. ‘07 or below on the sequoia. ‘06 or below on the tundra. Just eyeballing size, I think the modern day tacos/Colorado’s/etc are probably around the same size as the old tundras.
